Editorial Review for The American Hotel – by Bryan Miller

The Scene
The 155-year-old hotel's four Victorian dining rooms deliver on charm, with ornate chandeliers, languid ceiling fans and nautical artifacts covering the walls. In spite of these trappings, it is not a stuffy place. Enthusiastic and well-schooled young servers gleefully run down menu specials and cast a vigilant eye all evening. The American Hotel is nationally known for its wine list, an enormous leather-bound tome that takes two athletic waiters to deliver it. Prices are reasonable, and the selection is awesome, rich in many vintages from South Africa to Seattle.

The Food
The menu is contemporary American. Seafood is a good bet, especially the Peconic Bay oysters and Gardiner's Bay clams on the half shell. A changing roster of traditional American desserts is worth a look.

Fine food, exceptional wine although pricey. We enjoyed the Piano bar. Have the bananas foster for dessert. The service is excellent.

The Au Pauvre was indeed zesty, very charred, almost crisp on the outside, but still somehow pink on the inside. The oysters were perfect. My friend had a bison steak, which I think is a littel dry, but that seems to be the nature of bison. The wine list was overwhelming, but we managed to find an inexpensive Spanish wine that went very well with out meat.

Pros: foor, service, location
